By Simon Canacott a well known local artist.
Simon Canacott (b. 1964, Reigate, England) is a self-taught British artist whose work spans painting, drawing and sculpture. Possessing a natural ability for drawing from an early age, he later studied engineering, where the disciplines of technical drawing and draughtsmanship helped shape his keen eye for perspective and structure. These qualities are particularly evident in his highly detailed pen-and-ink depictions of architecture, streetscapes and town and city scenes.
Away from art, Simon has pursued a wide range of disciplines. Simon was a boxer, then he represented England in karate and ran a highly successful, league-winning karate club as a 3rd Dan instructor. He also held a Commercial Pilot’s Licence and was a qualified Flying Instructor. In addition, he is a keen motorcyclist, was a Motorcycle Riding Instructor and was a qualified Motorcycle Technician, as well as a qualified Strength & Conditioning Coach, Gym Instructor, Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer. Despite these varied achievements, his principal career and lifelong passion remains art.
Working across a wide range of media — including watercolour, acrylic, oil, pastel and pen and ink — Simon frequently combines materials to create expressive mixed-media works. His subjects range widely, encompassing landscape, seascape, architecture, wildlife, portraiture, still life and motorsport.
Simon’s work has been widely reproduced and commissioned for commercial and editorial use, appearing in advertising campaigns, magazine covers and features, books, manuals, calendars, postcards and greetings cards. His imagery has also been used on pub signs, beer bottles, corporate installations and even on an Armenian coin and commemorative medal.
Alongside private commissions, his work has been exhibited in numerous galleries across the United Kingdom, including solo exhibitions, demonstrations and teaching engagements. Today his work is held in private and corporate collections throughout the UK and internationally, including across Europe, North America, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
Despite a varied professional background, Simon’s enduring focus remains the continual development of his artistic practice.
